When it comes to environmental preservation, eating less meat and more plants is not a new message. Still, you've got to love the way The PB&J Campaign is spreading the word.
Meet "PB&J Girl" and "PB&J Boy," the edible representatives of The PB&J Campaign. They are lovingly referred to as the organization's "spoke-sandwiches."
We've talked about the PB&J Campaign before here on Planet Green, so you know what they're all about: Concerned citizens dedicated to environmental preservation, starting with lunch. Their philosophy is, since everything you eat comes from plants, why not take out the middleman (i.e. an "animal intermediary")? You'd substantially reduce your carbon footprint, and not only by foregoing land-roaming creatures, but seafood too.
But, wait - animal intermediaries are delicious! Can't I still eat organic, grass-fed beef? Of course you can. But before you bite into your burger, consider this:
- The water it takes to produce the beef on one burger could produce peanuts for about 17 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
- The land that it takes to produce that beef could produce peanuts for 19 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
- The livestock sector is responsible for 18 percent of global climate change.
With numbers like that, we were definitely ready to trade our pastrami for peanuts...but there's just one problem. How do you stave off inevitable PB&J fatigue? By trying a whole smattering of peanut butter recipes, that's how.
Here are 15 ideas to jazz up your peanut butter stock, with recipes savory, sweet, and snacky. In keeping with the mission of the PB&J Campaign, most recipes below are vegan.
