6 Tasty Brain-Boosting Treats, Made Sustainable
Whether you're already a green genius, or on your way to becoming one—power up with these six brain-boosting foods courtesy of Gaiam. The article cites a recent study from the Alzheimer's Association that's found a link between good nutrition and the prevention or delayed onset of Alzheimer's disease.
I, however, took the eco-liberty of greening up the suggested snacks. But the connecting strand between them all are that they contain one or more of the following: omega-3 fatty acids, inflammation fighting B vitamins and anti-aging anti-oxidants.
Stick this on the fridge and chow down so you'll beat the odds of forgetting your eco-a, b's and c's.
1. Eggs
The round white shell oozes oodles of protein, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins. Look for organic, free-range varieties in the stores if you don't have a local, egg-producing farm or urban coop nearby.
2. Almonds
The tiny brown bauble boasts omega-3 and tons of vitamin E. Look for raw, organic, un-roasted versions. Or dip a spoon into some organic almond butter for a more luxurious treat.
3. Blueberries
Good thing blueberry's summer season is here! Stock up on the wild, organic gems at your local farmer's market. Then toss them on top of cereal, yogurt or pop them plain for true taste of nature's candy.
4. Dark, Leafy Greens
The darker the leaf, the better for you. Stake out your local farmer's market to see what's in season. Right now in New York, my food coop's shelves are offering local arugula, collards, and mustard greens.
5. Green Tea
Steeping with anti-oxidants, green tea is for many natural beauties, an anti-aging miracle. Green tea certainly isn't local, however, so if you make it part of your health regime, look out for organic, fair trade brands.
6. Coffee
Like green tea, coffee's anti-oxidant make-up is gaining cred among health professionals everywhere. Make your cuppa joe green with an organic, fair trade brew. Sip minimally though if you're prone to caffeine-induced jitters or insomnia.
