Ah, reading food labels...the stuff that makes us spend way too much time loitering around the grocery store. Marketers have a field day with food labels because it's their job to make food sound delicious and as healthy as it can. Are many of the claims misleading with empty meanings? It seems as if the answer is an emphatic "Yes!"
I've been reading labels incessantly since my daughter was young. She had an allergy that went undetected until we made the connection between the cereal she was eating (berry, berry something) and some scary symptoms.
Here's what happened: There was a food dye (blue dye #2) in her favorite "natural" cereal of the moment. When she broke out in hives we gave her Children's Benadryl, which also included the dye! After a few rounds of that nonsense, we got wise. We learned to avoid food dyes and to read labels very carefully. Everything from lip balm to ice cream became suspect.
