Do you know where your eggs come from?

A commentary published by the Guardian today argues that the egg recall is reason for the FDA to lighten up on the regulatory process for approving genetically engineered animals.
To simplify the argument: if the FDA had allowed technologies that would "enhance disease resistance in eggs," the salmonella outbreak could have been prevented.
Specifically, the author takes issue with the FDA looking at the type of technology used and not at the risks involved, which is a fair point—consistency from the FDA seems like a reasonable expectation. But the application of any technology for the purpose of allowing unhealthy—and cruel—conditions to persist is not.
