Cod liver oil is all the rage right now in the supplement world and with good reason; it's loaded with omega 3 fatty acids as well as Vitamin B12 and B6. These nutrients that are crucial to a healthy, happy body. But the purest form comes in the fish itself.
Cod is most certainly a heart healthy fish but it was almost fished to extinction. Cod stocks collapsed in the 1990's and as a result, it's still a threatened species. Atlantic cod is considered a vulnerable species, on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
A new study has revealed that some cod is being mislabeled in a big way. Cheaper fish are being mixed into the batch and mislabeled as more expensive cod in Ireland. It's a fraudulent means by which companies are profiting. Additionally, in the UK endangered Atlantic cod is also being sold as sustainably sourced Pacific cod to further deceive consumers.
According to Food Navigator:
In an attempt to understand seafood mislabeling more thoroughly in Europe, 226 cod products were purchased from Ireland and the UK, genetically identified using a DNA barcoding technique (COI barcoding gene), and species identification results were compared against product labels.
The European study found mislabeling to be the case in 7 percent of UK cod and 28 percent of Irish cod. The fish are disguised by breading, smoking, or battering so that consumers can't tell by appearance. So what's really in your fish and chips?
