Diabetes affects nearly one in 12 people in this country and that statistic is on the rise. Type 2 Diabetes is largely due to your diet and once you're diagnosed with the disease there are a number of foods that are off limits. Instead of what you can't eat, why not learn about the foods that can actually help treat your symptoms? According to New Life Journal, here are some unlikely foods that diabetics can experiment with in their diets.<

1. Bitter Melon

2. Cinnamon A study at the Human Nutrition Center found that cinnamon is effective at converting glucose to energy. Another study at the USDA found that taking ½ tsp of cinnamon a day for 40 days reduced levels of glucose and triglycerides in the blood by nearly 25 percent in patients with type 2 diabetes. With numbers like that, why would you not give it a try?

3. Turmeric A study done at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at the Columbia University Medical Center found that turmeric was beneficial in reducing the inflammation in the arteries. The antioxidant qualities of turmeric lessened resistance to insulin that later cause the disease in mice. And as turmeric is such a delicious addition to in so many of my favorite recipes, it's just not very difficult to include.

4. Fenugreek Seeds

These seeds are used in curry preparations and they are also known to have blood sugar lowering benefits in the body. Fenugreek seeds grow into greens which are available in ethnic food stores. Both the greens and the seeds are known to lower blood sugar.
