Fried Green Tomatoes
Yield: Makes 3 to 4 servings
Ingredients:
2
medium green tomatoes

1/4
cup all-purpose flour

1/4
cup yellow cornmeal

1/2
teaspoon salt

1/2
teaspoon garlic salt

1/2
teaspoon ground red pepper

1/2
teaspoon cracked black pepper

1
cup buttermilk

1
cup vegetable oil

Hot pepper sauce (optional)



 
Preparation:

Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, garlic salt, red pepper and black pepper in pie plate or shallow bowl; mix well. Pour buttermilk into second pie plate or shallow bowl.

Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, dip tomato slices into buttermilk, coating both sides. Immediately dredge slices in flour mixture; shake off excess flour mixture.

Cook tomato slices in hot oil 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to parchment paper or paper towels. Serve immediately with pepper sauce, if desired.


Serving Suggestion Serve fried green tomatoes with shredded lettuce.
