Fried Green Tomatoes

INGREDIENTS
| 2 | medium green tomatoes |
| 1/4 | cup all-purpose flour |
| 1/4 | cup yellow cornmeal |
| 1/2 | teaspoon salt |
| 1/2 | teaspoon garlic salt |
| 1/2 | teaspoon ground red pepper |
| 1/2 | teaspoon cracked black pepper |
| 1 | cup buttermilk |
| 1 | cup vegetable oil |
| Hot pepper sauce (optional) | |
PREPARATION:
- Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, garlic salt, red pepper and black pepper in pie plate or shallow bowl; mix well. Pour buttermilk into second pie plate or shallow bowl.
- Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, dip tomato slices into buttermilk, coating both sides. Immediately dredge slices in flour mixture; shake off excess flour mixture.
- Cook tomato slices in hot oil 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to parchment paper or paper towels. Serve immediately with pepper sauce, if desired.
Serving Suggestion
Serve fried green tomatoes with shredded lettuce.
