Yield

Makes about 4-1/2 dozen cookies

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup molasses
1 egg
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
White or colored frostings

Preparation

  1. Beat butter and brown sugar in large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until creamy. Add water, molasses and egg; beat until blended. Add flour, baking soda, ginger, allspice, cinnamon and cloves; beat until well blended. Wrap dough tightly with plastic wrap; refrigerate about 2 hours or until firm.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease cookie sheets. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface with lightly floured rolling pin to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter. Place cutouts 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Decorate with frostings as desired. Store in airtight containers.
