The third yama is asteya, non-stealing. The application to green thinking goes well beyond the obvious not taking things without paying from them from the store.

Consider for not a small moment the following passage on what asteya means:

...Control your desires and live within your means. Do not use borrowed resources for unintended purposes or keep them past due. Do not gamble or defraud others...

Then consider that at the root of all our environmental problems--from climate change, to local air pollution, to biodiversity loss--is failure to recognize and live within ecological limits. Viewed philosophically it is only a small step to calling this stealing. Taking more than your fair share is stealing.
