Find Healthy, Green Substitutes for All Your Kid's Favorite Meals
For busy mom Alicia, it's difficult to run a household and get a healthy meal on the table every evening for the kids. Fast food is all too easy and the kids love it, so what do you do to please the kids and fix an easy, healthy meal all at the same time? According to Registered Dietitian Colleen Gerg in a recent episode of Emeril Green, kids take between 14 and 17 exposures to certain foods before they can really decide if they like them, so if your kid wouldn't eat broccoli one week, don't give up, try it next week as well. Here are her healthy substitutes for all your kid's favorite fast food treats:
- Instead of cheap fast food hamburgers, make a turkey burger. With half the fat, it's a much healthier and still super delicious option. The best part about turkey burgers is that they can take on so many flavors. Make it Asian style by marinating the meat in organic soy sauce, fresh ginger, red curry paste, and teriyaki marinade.
- While your kids may love French fries, they're loaded with fat and sodium. Instead, why not try baked sweet potato fries that are loaded with Vitamin A and C? Try Emeril's Recipe: Sweet Potato Fries with Two Dipping Sauces.
- Make baked chicken nuggets coated with corn flakes rather than buying fried chicken nuggets at a fast food joint. Season chicken tenderloins and coat the chicken with egg. Dip in a mixture of corn flakes and bread crumbs and then bake until cooked through.
