5 Green Reasons to Scoop into Heavenly, Homemade Ice Cream

It's so much easier to dip my spoon into calorie-dense deliciousness when there's a little bit of good behind it. Whether it's from a friend who made it with love or a company considerate of fair trade, organic and ethical practices.

And that my friend, is why I present to you these 5 Green Reasons to Use an Ice Cream Maker courtesy of re-nest. Homemade ice cream is inherently green—and therefore a guiltless reason to break out an ice cream maker and get started.

1. You can roll right by the freezer aisle's artificial options and play organic and local chef, using only the healthiest, freshest ingredients: organic milk, free-range eggs, seasonal fruit or fair trade chocolate. Have fun concocting your favorite flavors!

2. Spare excessive freezer aisle energy use by going off the grid entirely with an old-school hand crank ice cream maker or using an electric mixer which takes less than 20 minutes.

3. Reduce waste. You'll save ice cream containers from hitting the landfill thanks to handy, reusable containers you most likely already own.

4. Just like 'farm to plate,' think 'dairy to bowl.' When your ice cream's food mileage is the distance from your farmer's market, to kitchen counter, to mouth—you'll be cutting down on carbon emissions.

5. It's a money saver so you'll have more money to donate to a worthy eco-cause!

(If you end up chowing down on a little too much creamy goodness, you could always break out the ice-cream friendly, DIY capri pants.)

Happy ice cream making!
