The Steve Jobs Cheese Head

The Cook's Den

So, Steve Jobs launched his latest Apple baby to much accolades. It's important to recognize iPad's relative greenness. Yet, it's another electronic gadget that fuels the ongoing debate about the gluttonous arena of consumer consumption. But...want and need are robust forces, and last week I put them to the test.

Taking a cautionary consumer risk, and being an appreciator of most things Mac (although not the techiest blogger in the bunch), I thought I would check out what all the iPad hubbub was about. I headed over to the Apple store only to be presented with a long line that streamed out the door and around the corner. OK, everyone it seemed had the same celebratory idea and wanted to check out the latest toy. The temptation to scoop up the iPad tike, swaddle it in a sleeve and give it a loving home was evident and would probably get the better of most of those who waited eagerly for a touch.

Finally, shoulder to shoulder with the other revelers, I squeezed in and gave the screen a whirl. When it was time to give up my space to another eager voyeur, I am proud to say the iPad didn't make it home with me.

Steve Jobs, in his presentation about the new iPad in January, positioned that the iPad will be the best device for certain kinds of computing, like browsing the Web, reading eBooks and playing videos. Is it?
