It can be easy to get a bit down and out about the state of the planet, especially as an environmental writer. But I vowed a long time ago that I would do my best to try and stay positive on the matter. That doesn't mean sugar coating stories, but moreover, trying to be optimistic about things that can be done to move forward. And it's stories like this that make staying positive much easier. A recent article on Mark Bittman's Web site documents all the work the next generation is doing to make our plates a little greener. And we're not talking drinking organic milk and visiting a local farm once in a while.

Kids like Orren Fox, Sadie Hope-Gund, and Safiyah Riddle are taking on adult-sized projects in an effort to change the face of food in this nation. Orren started his own chicken farm with 27 hens and Sadie and Safiyah made a movie called What's On Your Plate that played earlier this year.
