Thanks to local producers like Lois's Produce in Leedsville, Va., northern Virginia residents have the opportunity to enjoy some of the freshest local produce available. Lois and Gary Allensworth of Lois's Produce are fourth generation produce farmers that grow produce to be sold at the farmers' market and at Fairfax County area grocery chains for 11 months out of the year.
Eating local means reducing your carbon footprint.
With the help of greenhouse planting and a wide variety of crops, Lois's Produce successfully grows seasonal produce almost year round. In the Sensational, Seasonal Suppers episode of Emeril Green Lois and Gary share with Emeril what's growing on the farm.
Early Crops
These early crops cannot even be planted until the soil reaches 65 degrees. In the early season the farm grows peas, strawberries, onions, spring broccoli, string beans, tomatoes, summer squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet corn, two types of basil, cucumber, peppers, and eggplants.
Fall Crops
The season continues on into the fall and winter with the help of transplanting in the greenhouse especially with crops like okra. Other fall vegetables include winter squash, pumpkins, kale, turnips, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes.
