Planet Green

Many consumers don't realize that the seafood choices that they make can have a huge impact on the planet. While the ocean might look blue and beautiful above the surface, below the surface the ocean could be telling a different story. Sheila Bowman of Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch explains that overfishing and dangerous fishing methods are doing major damage to our ocean habitats. For example, a widely used method of fishing called trawling can quickly ruin huge swaths of ocean habitat. Trawling drags big nets with heavy chains on the ocean floor, gathering everything in its path in the net. Imagine a bulldozer on the ocean floor destroying all the biodiversity in its way.
But choosing sustainably fished seafood doesn't have to be complicated thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Pocket Seafood Guide. The handy guide fits right in your pocket or purse so that you can carry it with you any time that you're headed to the store, fish market, or restaurant. The guide is separated into three categories: red, yellow, and green. Seafood choices under the red category should be avoided, seafood choices under the yellow category can be eaten in moderation, and seafood choices under the green category should be the focus of your consumption. You should make sure that you have an updated version of the guide for your region whenever you buy fish.
