My husband drinks apple cider every morning for breakfast, rather than the usual orange juice. We live in Canada, so there aren't any orange groves, but there are plenty of apples. This fall, I've been buying my cider from a farmer who grows fantastic apples and presses the cider himself. He is a real talker, and he is positively rhapsodic about his cider recipe. He uses one type of apple as the base, then builds the flavour using another type for a bit of tang and another type for added sweetness.

My daughter, who also loves apple cider, made us some really delicious mulled cider on Christmas Eve. It seems to me that this is a wonderful drink to serve for NewYear's Eve as well. It's spicy and warming and entirely satisfying and will make your house smell wonderful while it heats slowly in your crock pot. Put a ladle into your crock pot and let your guests help themselves. For those who want an alcoholic version keep a bottle of rum or whisky for a delightful addition.

INGREDIENTS

2 quarts apple cider
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/8 tsp ground ginger 
1 tsp whole cloves
cinnamon stick
orange

PREPARATION:

  1. Stud the orange with the whole cloves. Put all the ingredients in a crockpot, cover and set on low for two to four hours.
