A lot of the organic companies that green consumers know and love started out as small-scale, independently owned businesses, but are now owned by some of the largest companies in America. Brands like Kraft and ConAgra created the industrial food system that people were buying those organic brands in order to fight, but they saw an exploding market for the sustainable food industry, and they bought in.
Next time you're at the supermarket, think about the brands you buy. Is your favorite granola being produced by, and supporting, a food giant that helped to create the monoculture practices that now dominate American agriculture? Or is your favorite meat substitute produced by a company that, in its other ventures, supports factory farming? Not to mention chocolate...
