Help Prevent Childhood Obesity by Living Green

Childhood obesity is no joke. According to Kids Health, the percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate—one out of three kids are now considered overweight or obese. That's serious stuff considering that overweight children and adolescents are more likely to have heart disease and type 2 diabetes down the road.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that 80 percent of those who were overweight as children between the ages of 10 and 15 went on to become obese adults by age 25.

It's no secret as to why this dramatic increase is occurring. If your child is on the road to obesity follow these simple tips for going green and help get your kids back in shape at the same time.

Pack a Green Lunch

Do not let your child hit the cafeteria everyday. It's wasteful and, as sad as it may be, cafeterias serve up some of the fattest food around. In order to keep them away from the vending machines and the sugar laden drinks make sure that they have enough food to keep them satiated all day.

Limit Television Time

I thought my sister-in-law was going overboard by never letting my niece watch television until she let her watch a few cartoons. The child watched brainlessly without a peep for an hour. I couldn't believe how it sucked the life out of her. You can bet that when I have children the same rules will apply. Many kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the television, computer, or playing video games.

Eat Dinner As A Family

It's crucial that kids understand the importance of sitting down and eating a home cooked meal. Eat as a family rather than eating take out or snacking throughout the day. Eating slowly and together can teach your children to enjoy their food, its taste, and your company. Check out Kelly Rossiter's guide to eating dinner as a family.
