A large oblong fruit, covered with sharply pointed spines, durians are not plucked but rather, are eaten only after they've been allowed to fall. Growing up a foot long and weighing as much as seven pounds, durians are valued for their edible flesh...despite the rather, uh, distinctive odor that flesh gives off.

The debate rages as to whether the durian's flavor is worth enduring its aroma (I say it is) so let's just say some foods qualify as an acquired taste while the durian is more of an acquired smell.
