We've already covered plenty of ways to make your own reusable shopping bag, from repurposing pillow cases, pant legs, and towels to working up some quick carryalls from t-shirts, bedding, and fused plastic bags. But Future Craft Collective has come up with another idea: turning old basketball jerseys into just the kind of breathable, washable bags that are perfect for protecting your produce.
You'll want to start with clean, dry jerseys—leftovers from your high school dunking days are fine, as long as you've gotten all the sweat off—in any size, and cut it below the armholes. Now you're left with one rectangle of fabric that you cut in half shortways, so you have two smaller rectangles (keep cutting until you get to the size that works best for you). Fold each rectangle so the right sides are together and sew along the bottom and open side, stopping 1/2 an inch from the top. Fold the top down to meet the spot where you stopped sewing, and sew along the edge; this creates a tunnel that you can loop a drawstring through for easier carrying and closing.
The smaller size and lightweight, breathable fabric makes these bags an ideal addition to your reusable bag collection—and a simple, easy way to keep your fruits and veggies safe on your next trip to the farmer's market or grocery store.
