I smoked for over ten years and probably reduced my lifespan by ten years in the process. And I smoked a lot. I smoked while I was working, driving, after meals, first thing in the morning, before bedtime and every time in between. On some days, I'd smoke two packs. I couldn't go an hour without a cigarette. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night just to have a smoke.
It was my dentist that convinced me to quit. He told me that my gums were badly scarred in the areas where I held the cigarette in my mouth and that if I kept smoking, there was a good chance that my gums would recede and I'd lose teeth or suffer an oral infection of some sort. So I quit, but it wasn't easy. It took me a over a year, but my gums are healthy and so am I.
And it's a good thing too. Cigarettes are horrible for your health and the environment. The cigarette butts get into the water supply and poison fish and smoking wreaks havoc on indoor air quality. Smoking also generates massive amounts of litter and packaging waste. Smoking is helping nobody.
