A new study put out by the American Chemical Society has linked paraffin candles with possible health problems. Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct. In fact, it is the last byproduct removed in the refining process, right after asphalt. The fumes released by paraffin candles are similar to the fumes emitted by burning diesel. Next time you are planning a romantic candle-lit dinner, you may want to think twice about the type of candle you use.
Long-Time Concerns
Concerns about paraffin candles are not new. The American Lung Association and the EPA have been warning folks that using these candles may decrease your indoor air quality. The ACS study speculates that many people who suffer from mysterious allergies may actually be suffering from the effects of paraffin pollution.
I like Candles. What Can I Do?
If you have some paraffin candles in your home, you don't have to throw them in the garbage. Use them in moderation and in well-ventilated areas. When you go to purchase new candles, make sure that they are made out of a natural, clean-burning substance like soy or beeswax.
