I read an article that mentioned Street Yoga in Yoga Journal and when I went online and watched their introduction video, I couldn't help but tear up. Street Yoga provides free yoga to Portland's most needy, homeless children. All of the students served by Street Yoga are either completely homeless or living in places of transition like a car, shelter, or moving from place to place. The tools that these students learn from classes at Street Yoga hit home in a big way.
Classes work on back pain for students that are often forced to sleep on uncomfortable cots in shelters or on the streets. They teach kids how to breathe away the pain and fear associated with such transitional times. Students use sun salutations to warm up when they're cold from walking around outside, and down dogs to relieve the anger that's associated with often very difficult and traumatic circumstances.
It hurts your heart to see that kids and young adults have to experience pain like this at such a young age, but each child interviewed says that yoga makes a difference in their lives. Watch the video and then donate to the cause.
