The annals of common knowledge suggest that we need to drink eight to ten eight-ounce glasses of water per day. That's over a half a gallon of water. Obviously, most of us don't drink that much water in a single day. There are a lot of "health gurus" out there that claim that the US population is walking around all dehydrated and unhealthy. Are we risking health problems by not drinking the recommended amount?
First off, your body needs to replenish the water it has lost, so there is no correct answer. If you are going to do something with water, drinking it is probably the least wasteful thing you can do. So if you are thirsty, it is suggested that you drink water.
But if someone spends their days fretting about getting 80 ounces of into their gob before bedtime, you can tell them to relax. Recommend to them that they drink when they are thirsty. The human body doesn't need 64-80oz of water a day. It needs only what it needs. And maybe we can save a little water by drinking only what we actually need.
