So, is Tex-Mex a nutritious cuisine? It all depends. Many Tex Mex dishes are practically drowning in cheese, which isn't that healthy. However, there are many nutritious elements of Tex-Mex cuisine. Let's take a look at some.

  • Beans are an extremely important part of the diet because they're packed with nutrition. They're high in complex carbohydrates, low in fat, low in calories, high in protein, high in dietary fiber and cholesterol free.
  • Rice, a staple of two-thirds of the world's population, is a nutritious grain that's cholesterol-, sodium- and fat-free.
  • Cheese might be high in fat, but consumed in moderation, it's pretty nutritious. One ounce gives you a third of your daily calcium requirement, as well as Vitamin D and protein.
  • Tortillas are low in fat but high in carbohydrates. Many people don't like to consume too many carbs. However, carbohydrates are essential for energy.

And of course there are the various vegetables you'll find in Tex Mex dishes -- tomatoes and peppers -- that provide Vitamins A and C.
