Fried Green Tomatoes
Makes 3 to 4 servings
|2||medium green tomatoes|
|1/4||cup all-purpose flour|
|1/4||cup yellow cornmeal|
|1/2||teaspoon garlic salt|
|1/2||teaspoon ground red pepper|
|1/2||teaspoon cracked black pepper|
|1||cup vegetable oil|
|Hot pepper sauce (optional)|
- Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, garlic salt, red pepper and black pepper in pie plate or shallow bowl; mix well. Pour buttermilk into second pie plate or shallow bowl.
- Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, dip tomato slices into buttermilk, coating both sides. Immediately dredge slices in flour mixture; shake off excess flour mixture.
- Cook tomato slices in hot oil 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to parchment paper or paper towels. Serve immediately with pepper sauce, if desired.
Serve fried green tomatoes with shredded lettuce.
