Makes about 3 dozen cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) butter
2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
Melted semisweet chocolate, chopped almonds, frosting, coconut or colored sprinkles (optional)

Let cool slightly. Add sugar, egg and vanilla to chocolate mixture; stir until well blended. Add flour; stir until well blended. Cover; refrigerate 30 minutes or until firm.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Shape dough by tablespoonfuls into balls; place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. If desired, flatten balls with bottom of drinking glass.
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Decorate as desired with melted chocolate, almonds, frosting, coconut or colored sprinkles.
